Located in the historic Pago Balbaina, in the municipality of El Puerto de Santa Maria, at the very heart of the Jerez region, lies Viña de las Animas—a vineyard whose story stretches back to time immemorial. Balbaína takes its name from the Balbo family, originally from Gades (modern-day Cadiz), during the era of Roman rule. A powerful reminder of the depth of this winemaking tradition is the archaeological site of Doña Blanca, also in El Puerto de Santa Maria, home to the best-preserved and oldest intact winery in Western Europe. Here, vines have been cultivated for millennia—perhaps far longer than we can even imagine.
Today, the winery stands upon the remains of the walls of the ancient Castillo de las Animas.

Our estate captures the magic of the legendary sunsets of the Coast of Light and the extraordinary albariza soils that define our terroir.
In the winery, we follow a minimal-intervention approach (and maximum dedication), with the invaluable collaboration of Raúl Moreno, Miguel’s expertise, and Sergio’s fearlessness, we seek the purest expression of the fruit. Small batches of wines with personality and soul.
All guided by a single philosophy: to craft wines that speak of the soil and the landscape that gave them life.
The project was founded in 2020 by Thomas de Wangen and Lorna Cooper, following a long career in wine import and distribution in Shanghai. Their return to Spain marked a life-changing commitment: to give back to the land everything they had learned while working with some of Europe’s finest growers, nurturing each parcel through organic and regenerative farming practices.
Lorna and Thomas, together with the vineyard team at Dominio de las Animas (Manolo, Pepe, Manolo, Diego, Juan…), work with organic farming practices and apply regenerative principles.
In our plots, Palomino—the region’s flagship grape—thrives under the influence of the Atlantic breeze and albariza soils, predominantly Tosca Cerrada. Alongside this, we are developing a project to recover native varieties such as Tintilla de Rota, Palomino de Jerez (an ancient variety distinct from Palomino Fino), Perruno, Vijiriega, Mantua de Pila, and Jaen Blanco.
And Thomas’s French side couldn’t resist experimenting with Chardonnay and Syrah…
Terroir
22 hectares of organically farmed vineyards.
Alongside their parallel project Diatomists, developed with Antonio Morenés and George Byrne, they restore terroir to its rightful place in the traditional fortified wines of Jerez, bringing back the singular identity of each pago and each cask.
